I’m not the biggest SNES fan and I haven’t dug into the library aside from the biggest Nintendo hits so I’ll just list my top 5. The variety of aircraft and challenges made it easy to look past how suspiciously flat everything was.
Everyone has their own favorite, but for us the basic battle theme stands out. A piece of music you will hear literally thousands of times as you fight your way across hill and vale, it always delivers.
Anyway, it was a great on-rails shooter with a cool perspective and looked proper “next-gen” before that was even a thing. The kind of game you were jealous of if you had a Megadrive. Nintendo threw everything at this oddity; a westernised, real-world, simple RPG with cartoon graphics and satirical aspirations.
Everyone says they love it now and praise it for being a classic, but on release and after five years of development it hit the shelves with all the grace of a Hall of Meat inductee. Yoshi rules and this is the game that put him on the map.

However, if you were around when Final Fantasy VI released, you’re more than likely to agree with me when I say Final Fantasy VI easily deserved a top five spot.

Super Mario Kart was still limited by the SNES’ hardware, so as a result, Nintendo had to create a believable racing game with 2D graphics. Whilst Super Mario World put players into a 2D platforming world with friendly faces and bright, welcoming colors, Super Metroid went the complete opposite direction. This super mario sunshine rom was released as StarWing for us European idiots, which didn’t even make sense because foxes don’t have feathers.

But “Super Turrican 2” is a worthy distraction for its well-designed boss fights and grapple sections. The original list was gold but I’d put Chrono Trigger numero uno. I didn’t feel right about including Super Mario All-Stars, which otherwise would probably top my list. Honorable mention to Pop’n Twinbee which I just recently got and played through for the Super Famicom. Not a big fan of shooters but this has wonderful colorful visuals and a lot of charm.
In the height of the arcade era, Midway’s over-the-top basketball game was so good that even those who were sports averse got into drilling three pointers from half court and shattering backboards. NBA Jam’s iconic catchphrases like, “He’s on fire,” and “Boomshakalaka,” are still drilled into our heads.
